RIO's updated Euro Nymph line has been thoroughly vetted and approved by FIPS Mouche as "Competition Legal". A system of special marks on the line has been endorsed and approved by FIPS Mouche, ensuring that competitive anglers do not have to waste valuable fishing time by having their line checked during competition hours.
The Euro Nymph line was designed by Steve Parrot to satisfy the need for a one fits all European style nymphing line that is competition legal. The line is built on a thin diameter, low stretch, supple core to maximize sensitivity and allow for lightning fast hook sets, while a highly visible tip helps anglers detect the slightest of strikes. This line is designed specifically for European style nymphing techniques, such as "French", "Czech", "Polish" and "Spanish" styles.
Fishing for big trout using streamers is evolving at unapparelled pace. One of the people pushing the envelope of equipment and technique is Kelly Galloup. Building flies that look more at home in the ocean that a trout river Kelly has developed specific equipment to fish larger bulky flies efficiently. He wanted a rod that can quickly deliver a cast to a target the size of a coffee cup using a big fly and sinking line. Rods that can get the job done are ones with powerful bottom sections mated to faster tip actions to help initiate the cast with a minimum of false casts. Since it is all but impossible to pick up and recast a 50-foot shot with a fast sinking lines the new StreamerX rods have been optimized to easily pick up a short line with a bulky fly and in a few false cases hit a small target.
To accomplish the task Kelly asked for a rod with with several upgrades from his former Bank Robber signature rod.
Upgrades
Thinner and faster tip for animating the fly and detect strikes for hook set.
Flex in the mid section of the rod to open up the cast and throw tighter loops.
A faster butt section. This is where the bulk of the kinetic energy is created and stored to deliver the fly on the forward stroke. Work smart not hard and deliver flies with the greatest efficiency.
StreamerX rods are all 9’ long and come in a 6, 7, and 8 weight. They have all titanium guides and Kelly’s favorite handle shape. They come with a hard case and are 4 pieces to travel well.
With Kelly’s custom handle shape, powerful bottom section and fast loading top section, this rod is build top to bottom for big flies and accuracy. If current conditions call for smaller flies, it will continue to surprise you with its versatility!
Skagit (wet flies/sink tips) heads offer the ability to fish larger heavier flies which require sink tips. It is possible to fish small dry flies or soft hackles on a skagit head, just a little less finesse.
Scandi (dry flies and small soft hackles) heads offer a more delicate presentation and are used for skating dry flies and soft hackles just beneath the surface.
OPST vs. Orvis Mission. A major grain difference what's going on?
OPST threw the skagit head industry a curve ball when Ed Ward and Jerry French collaborated on a whole new methodology when it came to designing skagit lines.
OPST heads are lighter and therefore 40 to 60 grains less than the rest of the industry.
So how did they do it and which is right for you.....
Skagit Head Formula
#1 It takes mass to move mass - Weight aka Grains
#2 Kinetic energy - Velcro Effect or Line Stick
Designing the perfect skagit is a delicate balance between these two elements.
OPST took the unique and wholly original approach of the "velcro effect."
OPST has designed a wider head which means a larger surface area must be peeled off of the water in order to execute the cast.
Feel. OPST vs Orvis Mission
OPST heads will feel lighter when casting. Most folks who began using heavier heads go through an adjustment period and may tend to find initially over line their rods by 25 grains though eventually dial things back as they adjust.
Mission Heads will be easier for most folks to adopt if they have some prior spey casting experience. They will load deeper into the rod and have an easier time punching through the wind due to the greater weight or grains.
All outfits come with 30lb dacron backing, and all shooting head packages (non-integrated heads) come with 35lb OPST Lazar running line. If you prefer 40lb please shoot us an email prior to ordering.
